Pink Ladies — Grease Vintage 1970s Tee
When Grease hit movie theaters in 1978, it gave the world one of the most unforgettable girl gangs in pop culture history: the Pink Ladies, Rydell High's fabulously rebellious clique of teenage girls with matching pink satin jackets and absolutely no interest in being good.
Led by the magnificently sarcastic Rizzo, played by Stockard Channing, the Pink Ladies included Frenchy, Marty, and Jan, with sweet, innocent Sandy eventually finding her way into their world of slumber parties, school dances, cigarettes, gossip, and questionable romantic advice.
And while Danny Zuko and the T-Birds got plenty of attention, let's be clear: the Pink Ladies were the real stars.
Rizzo had the attitude, Frenchy had the beauty-school ambitions, Marty had the boyfriends, and Jan had the snacks. Together, they represented a wonderfully messy version of female friendship that was considerably more interesting than the wholesome teenage girls usually seen in nostalgic 1950s entertainment.
The film's combination of 1950s rock-and-roll, 1970s sexuality, camp humor, and spectacular musical numbers made it an instant phenomenon. And for generations of gay audiences, Grease became essential viewing. The costumes, the choreography, the bitchy one-liners, Stockard Channing singing “There Are Worse Things I Could Do”—what more could anyone possibly want?
The Pink Ladies' signature jackets became instantly recognizable, inspiring decades of Halloween costumes, school productions, sleepovers, and girls who understood that matching outfits were always a good idea.
