Before Joan Rivers was terrifying celebrities on the red carpet, there was Phyllis Diller—wild hair, cigarette holder, ridiculous clothes, and one of the most recognizable laughs in show business.

Diller broke through nationally in the 1950s and ’60s, at a time when stand-up comedy was still overwhelmingly male. Instead of trying to fit the expected image of a glamorous female entertainer, she basically blew it up. She made herself the joke before anyone else could—mocking her looks, her cooking, her housekeeping, her sex life, and her fictional husband Fang with complete abandon.

And the look was incredible. Exploding hair, outrageous dresses, gloves, feather boas, ankle boots, enormous jewelry, and that impossibly long cigarette holder. She looked less like someone arriving to perform stand-up and more like someone who had escaped from a particularly good cocktail party.

Behind all that chaos was a genuinely groundbreaking comedian. Diller helped make room for generations of women who followed her, appearing constantly on television, in Las Vegas, in films, and alongside Bob Hope, while developing a persona that was entirely her own.

It’s also easy to understand her lasting camp and queer appeal. Everything was exaggerated. Everything was artificial. And rather than hiding any of it, Phyllis turned the whole construction of femininity into part of the joke. The woman understood presentation.
