Before Mick Jagger was permanently fixed in the public imagination as the swaggering frontman of the Rolling Stones, 1970’s Performance gave audiences a much stranger version of him.

Directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, the film stars James Fox as Chas, a violent London gangster who goes into hiding in the home of Turner, a reclusive former rock star played by Jagger. What begins as a British crime movie gradually dissolves into something far more psychedelic—sex, drugs, gender, identity, voyeurism, and the increasingly uncertain question of where one man ends and another begins.

Jagger’s face became central to the film’s imagery, particularly in the original promotional artwork. Beautiful, androgynous, decadent, and slightly sinister, his Turner feels less like conventional movie-star casting than an extension of everything dangerous that rock & roll seemed to represent at the end of the 1960s.

The film also has enormous queer appeal. Performance deliberately destabilizes masculinity and heterosexual identity, playing with bisexuality, androgyny, cross-dressing, sexual fluidity, and shifting identities in ways that were genuinely provocative in 1970. Jagger’s own famously ambiguous sexuality and feminine presentation only intensified the effect.

Initially controversial and difficult to categorize, Performance eventually became a major cult film, influencing generations of filmmakers, musicians, fashion designers, and artists. Its mixture of gangster brutality and decadent counterculture still feels remarkably strange.
