Pat Benatar — 1980s Rock Tee
There were plenty of women making rock music in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but few did it with quite the combination of attitude, glamour, and sheer vocal power as Pat Benatar. With her cropped hair, heavy eyeliner, leather outfits, and unmistakable voice, Benatar helped redefine what a female rock star could look and sound like.
Born Patricia Andrzejewski in Brooklyn in 1953, Benatar trained as a classical singer before finding her calling in rock and roll. Her 1979 debut album, In the Heat of the Night, introduced audiences to a formidable new talent, with songs like “Heartbreaker” and “We Live for Love” establishing her signature blend of hard rock, new wave, and pop.
Then came the 1980s, and Pat was everywhere.
“Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Fire and Ice,” “Promises in the Dark,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong,” and “Invincible” became radio staples, while her music videos helped define the early years of MTV. Her combination of tough-girl swagger and genuine emotional vulnerability made her one of the decade's most recognizable performers.
And she wasn't just playing a character. Benatar pushed back against an industry that frequently wanted women to be decorative rather than powerful. She could be glamorous, sexy, angry, romantic, and intimidating, sometimes all within the same three-minute song.
Naturally, that attitude found an enthusiastic audience among gay men and queer women. Between the leather, the eyeliner, the theatrical performances, and those enormous anthemic choruses, Benatar had everything a proper rock diva required. “Love Is a Battlefield” alone has provided enough dramatic dance-floor moments to last several generations.
Her partnership with guitarist and husband Neil Giraldo became one of rock's most enduring creative collaborations, and in 2022, the pair were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
