Papa Bear's was a gay bar in San Antonio, Texas, established in the mid-1980s by Robert "Papa Bear" Edwards.Located on Broadway near Mahncke Park, the bar became a significant gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community during that era.
In 1986, amidst the AIDS crisis, Edwards founded the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF) to provide care for those affected by the epidemic.Initially, he rented a small house off Austin Highway to care for clients, but as the need grew, he converted an office building behind Papa Bear's into a hospice facility.This initiative marked the city's first community-based response to the AIDS epidemic.In 1990, Edwards acquired a former nursing home on Grayson Street, which became the permanent headquarters for SAAF.He retired from the foundation in 1991, never having taken a salary for his work.Edwards passed away in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy and community service.
