Original Sin — Vintage Movie Tee
Released in 2001, Original Sin is a lush, overheated erotic thriller built around desire, deception, money, and two people who probably should never have trusted each other.
Antonio Banderas stars as Luis Vargas, a wealthy Cuban coffee merchant who arranges to marry an American woman he has never met. Angelina Jolie arrives as Julia Russell—beautiful, mysterious, and very quickly not quite who she claims to be. What begins as a romantic fantasy turns into a maze of lies, stolen identities, betrayal, obsession, and increasingly bad decisions.
The film is based on Cornell Woolrich’s novel Waltz into Darkness, previously adapted by François Truffaut as Mississippi Mermaid. Original Sin pushes the story firmly into turn-of-the-millennium erotic-thriller territory: tropical heat, elaborate costumes, candlelit rooms, dangerous sex, and the constant suspicion that somebody is about to disappear with the money.
Much of the movie’s appeal comes from the chemistry between Jolie and Banderas. Jolie was at the height of her early-2000s screen persona—beautiful, unpredictable, slightly dangerous—and Julia is exactly the kind of role that lets her weaponize all three.
