Omar Little — The Wire Tee

You hear the whistle before you see him.

Omar Little, played by the extraordinary Michael K. Williams, became one of the defining characters of The Wire—and one of television’s great antiheroes. Shotgun under his coat and whistling “The Farmer in the Dell,” Omar made his living robbing Baltimore drug dealers while following a moral code entirely his own.

What made Omar remarkable wasn't simply that he was feared. He was also openly gay, tender with his partners, fiercely loyal, intelligent, funny, and completely unwilling to hide who he was. When The Wire premiered in 2002, a character this complex was still extraordinarily rare: a Black gay man whose sexuality was essential to his identity without being the sole reason the character existed.

Williams gave Omar a humanity that turned what could have been a colorful supporting character into the soul of the series. He could be terrifying in one scene and heartbreaking in the next, becoming a fan favorite across the show's five seasons.

Omar also subverted nearly every expectation of masculinity surrounding him. In a world obsessed with reputation and toughness, one of its most feared men was openly queer—and nobody who knew Omar considered that a contradiction.
