Oil Can Harry’s — Replica Interior Sign Tee (1968–2021)

Opening its doors in 1968, Oil Can Harry’s became one of Los Angeles’ longest-running and most beloved gay bars, welcoming queer Angelenos and visitors for 52 years until it finally closed in January 2021.

Known for its massive wooden dance floor, Saturday disco nights, and country-western line dancing, Oil Can Harry’s was more than a bar—it was a gathering place, a fundraising hub during the AIDS crisis, and a sanctuary where queer people could be themselves long before LGBTQ+ nightlife was mainstream. In the early days, the bar even used a secret alarm and peephole to protect patrons from police raids under laws that once made same-sex dancing illegal.

One of the most recognizable elements of its interior was its bold, kitschy sign—often featuring the mustachioed “Oil Can Harry” character with stovepipe hat and grin—a fixture that became as iconic to regulars as the wooden dance floor itself.
