Before rainbow crosswalks and Pride sponsorship banners, there was Noo Zoo Co. — a pulsing, sweat-slicked cornerstone of San Antonio’s underground queer nightlife.
Opening in 1979, Noo Zoo Co. arrived at the height of disco’s afterglow and carried that electric energy straight into the 1980s. It wasn’t subtle. It wasn’t sleepy. It was loud, playful, and unapologetically fun — a dance club where drag royalty, leather boys, Tejano queens, service industry night owls, and first-timers all collided under spinning lights.
For nearly two decades (1979–1997), Noo Zoo Co. helped shape the city’s LGBTQ social scene — through the peak club years, through the heartbreak of the AIDS crisis, and into a changing ’90s nightlife culture. It was a place to sweat out the week, celebrate birthdays, fall in love at 1:45 a.m., and rebuild community when the world outside wasn’t always welcoming.
