Nexus — Austin, Texas (1970s–1990s)
For years, Nexus was one of Austin’s most important lesbian clubs — a loud, sweaty, joyous room where women came to dance, flirt, fall in love, break up, and do it all over again. In a city known for music and rebellion, Nexus was a place where queer women built their own scene, their own soundtracks, and their own version of nightlife.
Nexus wasn’t polished or precious. It was real. Packed dance floors, DJs, theme nights, leather, denim, lipstick, boots, and attitude. It was a space where visibility felt electric and community felt immediate — where chosen family formed under strobe lights and on smoky patios.
Like so many lesbian bars, Nexus mattered far beyond its walls. It was a meeting place, a refuge, a proving ground, and a celebration all at once. A reminder that queer women didn’t wait for inclusion — they built it themselves.
