Ms. C’s — Denver, Colorado (1981–2009)
For nearly three decades, Ms. C’s was a cornerstone of Denver’s lesbian nightlife—a place to dance, drink, meet friends, and find community in a city with relatively few spaces created specifically for queer women.
Operating from 1981 to 2009, Ms. C’s survived an extraordinary period of change in LGBTQ+ life. It opened when lesbian bars still provided an essential refuge from a largely unwelcoming outside world and remained through the AIDS crisis, the culture wars of the 1990s, and a new era of growing LGBTQ+ visibility in the 2000s.
Like the great lesbian bars of the period, Ms. C’s was more than a night out. It was a social network before social networks existed—a place for first dates, breakups, softball teams, birthday parties, dancing, fundraisers, political organizing, and the chosen families that formed around the same familiar bar stools.
Its longevity was particularly remarkable. Lesbian bars have historically faced greater economic challenges than their male counterparts, and many disappeared as neighborhoods changed and queer social life became less centered around dedicated bars. Twenty-eight years in business made Ms. C’s an enduring institution within Denver’s LGBTQ+ community.
