Mr. Ebony Leather — 2001 Contest Tee

By 2001, Mr. Ebony Leather was part of a long tradition of contests created to celebrate Black men within the broader leather community—a scene that had not always offered equal visibility or recognition to people of color.

Leather contests grew out of the bar, motorcycle-club, and social-club culture of the 1970s and 1980s, eventually becoming major community events in their own right. Titles like Mr. Ebony Leather created space for Black leathermen to be seen, celebrated, and represented on their own terms while also raising money, building community, and connecting local scenes to the larger national leather world.

The events were about far more than appearance. Contestants were often judged on stage presence, knowledge of leather history and culture, community involvement, and their ability to represent the title throughout the following year. Winners frequently became ambassadors—appearing at Pride events, leather weekends, fundraisers, and other contests across the country.
