Mother’s — Houston Vintage Gay Bar Tee
Mother’s was part of Houston’s sprawling Montrose gay-bar scene, when the neighborhood was packed with bars, clubs, restaurants, bookstores, and other businesses serving the city’s LGBTQ+ community.
Located at 402 Lovett Boulevard, Mother’s was still appearing in gay travel and nightlife guides in the early 1990s, alongside Houston institutions like Mary’s, Ripcord, Heaven, J.R.’s, Montrose Mining Company, and Brazos River Bottom.
Montrose had developed into the center of gay Houston by then, but it was more than a nightlife district. These bars functioned as meeting places, information networks, fundraisers, and chosen family—especially through the AIDS crisis and during years when Texas laws and local politics could be openly hostile toward gay people.
