Marlena’s — San Francisco, CA (1990–2013)

Located at 488 Hayes Street in Hayes Valley, Marlena’s was one of San Francisco’s most beloved queer drag bars—a deeply personal, community-driven space operated by drag performer Marlena, the stage persona of Garry Buxton.

For over two decades, Marlena’s became known for its welcoming atmosphere, intimate drag performances, and unmistakable personality. Unlike larger nightclub-style venues, the bar carried the feeling of a neighborhood gathering place—small, social, and built around regulars who treated it like home.

One of its most legendary details was the décor: more than 1,000 Santa Claus dolls packed throughout the space year-round, creating a surreal holiday atmosphere that became inseparable from the bar’s identity. The mix of camp, warmth, and eccentricity made Marlena’s feel completely singular.

The performances reflected that same spirit—drag that felt close to the crowd, funny, emotional, and rooted in community rather than spectacle alone. It welcomed a broad mix of patrons and became one of those rare places where everyone seemed to know each other eventually.

When Marlena’s closed in 2013, it marked the end of a truly distinctive chapter in San Francisco queer nightlife history.
