The Manhandler Saloon was a cornerstone of Chicago’s gay bar scene for four decades. Located at 1948 N. Halsted in Lincoln Park, it opened in 1980 and became known for its no-nonsense atmosphere, friendly regulars, and a space that welcomed leather and Levi’s with pride. Inside, the vibe was classic and unpretentious—dim lights, a strong jukebox, and a sense of community that kept people coming back.
It wasn't flashy or curated, but it had heart. The bar featured a cozy patio in the back and a layout that encouraged conversation, camaraderie, and connection. For many, it was a safe space and a second home.
The Manhandler closed in November 2020, another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic, and by 2021 the building was being converted for other use. But its legacy lives on—in memories, in stories, and in the sense of belonging it gave to so many.
