M&K — Asbury Park, NJ (1970s–1980s)
Before Asbury Park’s nightlife began to fade, M&K stood as one of the Jersey Shore’s defining gay discos—a massive, high-energy club that helped turn the city into a major East Coast LGBTQ+ destination during the 1970s and ’80s.
Known for its huge dance floor, elaborate lighting, and nonstop disco atmosphere, M&K drew crowds from New York, Philadelphia, and across New Jersey looking for something bigger and freer than what many smaller hometown bars could offer. It was part of the era when Asbury Park’s queer nightlife rivaled much larger cities—boardwalk weekends, packed clubs, and dance floors that stayed full until morning.
The club became closely tied to the golden age of disco and early club culture, reflecting a moment when nightlife itself felt transformative: music, movement, visibility, and escape all happening at once.
By the time newer venues like Down the Street emerged in the late ’80s, M&K had already cemented its place as one of the foundational clubs of the Shore scene.
