M/B Club (Los Angeles, California) — 1977–2004

A beloved staple of Los Angeles’ queer underground for nearly three decades, the M/B Club was one of Hollywood’s most enduring private hangouts for gay men from 1977 until its closing on January 11, 2004. It started in the Silver Lake and Sunset strip area—originally connected with Don’s Male Box—and later settled at 4550 Melrose Ave, where it became a neighborhood fixture for Eastsiders, Hollywood regulars, and community members from all points east of the L.A. River.

Unlike glitzy West Hollywood discos, the M/B Club was known for its laid-back, friendly vibe. Regulars wore 501s and T-shirts, leaning into casual mix-and-meet culture rather than rigid dress codes or exclusive scenes. With no alcohol license, it relied on sodas and conversation, and the staff doubled as hosts who kept the space warm and welcoming long before bar culture became commercialized.
