In 1981, Halston appeared as himself in a special fashion-themed episode of The Love Boat, alongside fellow designers Bob Mackie, Geoffrey Beene, and Gloria Vanderbilt. The Pacific Princess was headed to Acapulco for a fashion festival, because apparently even Captain Stubing understood the importance of American sportswear.
By then, Halston was Halston. He had helped define the sleek glamour of 1970s American fashion with flowing silhouettes, Ultrasuede, minimalism, and clothes that somehow managed to look both effortless and wildly expensive. Add Liza Minnelli, Studio 54, Elsa Peretti, Bianca Jagger, and Andy Warhol, and you have an entire New York era wrapped up in one name.
Which makes his appearance on The Love Boat particularly wonderful. This wasn't an actor playing a fashion designer—Halston simply showed up as Halston, entering the episode through the show's gloriously cheesy celebrity opening credits like any other guest star.
