Jim French’s “Longhorn’s Dance”
Jim French—founder of COLT Studio and one of the most influential gay illustrators of the 20th century—created the “Longhorn’s Dance” drawing during the era when queer erotic art circulated quietly through mail-order catalogs, physique magazines, and private collections. The image, featuring hyper-masculine men in a Western bar setting, blended sexuality, cowboy mythology, and subtle tenderness at a time when open depictions of male intimacy were still censored or criminalized.
The artwork gained a second life as it was reproduced, traded, and later adopted decoratively in leather bars and gay country-western dance spaces, becoming a visual shorthand for a subculture that embraced rugged masculinity, boots, denim, and defiant sensuality. Longhorn’s Dance helped shift queer representation away from stereotypes and toward strength, confidence, and unapologetic desire.
