Few television characters are as immediately recognizable—or as wonderfully strange—as Margaret Lanterman, the Log Lady from Twin Peaks.

Played by Catherine E. Coulson, Margaret was one of those characters who could have been treated as a joke, but David Lynch and Mark Frost gave her something much more interesting. She was eccentric, funny, unsettling, and somehow deeply sincere. And yes, she carried a log that she insisted had things to say.

The Log Lady became one of the purest expressions of what made Twin Peaks so good: the idea that the oddest person in the room might actually be the one paying the closest attention.

She first appeared when the series premiered in 1990, wandering through a world of diners, Douglas firs, red curtains, murder investigations, and people who were never quite what they seemed. Over time, Margaret became less of a novelty and more of a kind of spiritual observer—someone connected to the woods and to whatever was happening just beyond everyone else’s understanding.
