Pulled from an original 1970s poppers promotion, this graphic comes from the era when alkyl nitrites became closely intertwined with gay nightlife, sexual liberation, and the increasingly confident world of businesses marketing directly to gay men.

The branding tells you almost everything about the period. Locker Room tapped into the hypermasculine fantasy that ran through 1970s gay culture—athletes, jocks, gym clothes, sweat, muscles, and all the possibilities suggested by putting a group of men together in a room with very few clothes. It was macho imagery served with a distinctly queer wink.

Poppers were fixtures of the era's discos, bathhouses, leather bars, adult theaters, and bedrooms, and their wonderfully unsubtle advertisements became a visual language unto themselves. Brands competed with names and graphics that promised masculinity, stamina, adventure, and occasionally something resembling chemistry.
