Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special — Little Richard & Pee-wee Herman (1988) Vintage Sweatshirt

On December 21, 1988, CBS aired Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special, possibly the gayest hour of holiday television ever broadcast on a major American network.

And that's saying something.

Created by Paul Reubens, the one-hour extravaganza brought together an absolutely ridiculous collection of celebrities, including Cher, Grace Jones, Charo, k.d. lang, Joan Rivers, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Whoopi Goldberg, Dinah Shore, Oprah Winfrey, and the legendary Del Rubio Triplets.

Apparently, Liberace was busy.

Among the evening's most memorable guests was Little Richard, the flamboyant rock-and-roll pioneer whose towering pompadour, outrageous personality, and unmistakable scream had been scandalizing American audiences since the 1950s.

And what did Pee-wee have planned for this particular music legend?

Ice skating, naturally.

In one wonderfully absurd sequence, Pee-wee joins Little Richard on a frozen pond, where the rock-and-roll icon struggles to remain upright on his skates. Pee-wee confidently demonstrates his own spectacular skating abilities, only to have his little secret exposed when the professional skater he'd hired as a double shows up looking for approval.

Even Little Richard couldn't compete with that kind of showmanship.

The special itself was a glorious celebration of everything that made Pee-wee's Playhouse so wonderful. There were bizarre decorations, talking furniture, outrageous costumes, celebrity appearances, and enough winking adult humor to fly straight over the heads of the children watching.

And then there was Grace Jones, emerging from a giant shipping crate to perform The Little Drummer Boy dressed like a futuristic alien Christmas ornament.

Seriously, who approved this magnificent nonsense?

Although marketed as family entertainment, the special was packed with the kind of camp sensibility, theatrical excess, and queer cultural references that made Paul Reubens' creation a favorite among gay audiences.

It was essentially a downtown New York drag show disguised as Saturday morning children's television.

And somehow, CBS put it on at Christmas.

Nearly four decades later, Pee-wee's Playhouse Christmas Special remains a cult holiday classic, a wonderfully strange time capsule of 1980s pop culture featuring some of the most fabulously eccentric performers ever assembled in one television program.
