Some album titles leave very little room for misunderstanding.

Released in 1973, Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On was a major shift from the social and political urgency of What’s Going On. This time the subject was desire, intimacy, sex, love, and absolutely no reason to pretend otherwise.

The title track became one of Gaye’s signature recordings, but the entire album has that same warm, slow-burning atmosphere. It helped establish the sensual soul sound that would become such a huge part of 1970s music—and made Marvin one of the era’s great sex symbols in the process.

This design comes from the wonderful world of 1970s Black poster art, when record stores, head shops, bedrooms, dorm rooms, and neighborhood shops were filled with inexpensive posters of musicians, athletes, political figures, Black heroes, and cultural icons. The graphics were bold, colorful, sometimes wonderfully crude, and instantly recognizable.
