Le Salon — San Francisco, CA (1980–2015)
A longtime fixture on Polk Street, Le Salon operated from 1980 to 2015 as part of one of San Francisco’s most historically significant LGBTQ+ corridors. By the time it opened, Polk had already established itself as a center of queer nightlife and culture—and Le Salon fit directly into that ecosystem of bars, shops, and after-hours spaces.
Known for its unmistakable storefront and direct, unapologetic presence, it was one of the venues that kept Polk Street’s identity intact even as the city’s scene gradually shifted toward the Castro. It wasn’t designed to blend in—it was part of a strip where visibility and coded culture existed side by side.
Over its 35-year run, Le Salon witnessed major shifts in the community and the city itself, remaining a consistent presence through changing eras of nightlife, culture, and urban development.
