L.A. Tool & Die — Vintage Gay Adult Film Tee
Before gay adult films became an industry, Joe Gage was making them look like movies.
Released in 1979, L.A. Tool & Die was written and directed by Tim Kincaid under the name Joe Gage and became the final installment of his now-legendary Working Man Trilogy, following Kansas City Trucking Co. (1976) and El Paso Wrecking Corp. (1978).
The trilogy traded glamorous fantasy for truck drivers, mechanics, construction workers, work boots, denim, sweat and machinery. Its men weren't presented as delicate or exotic—they were ordinary, unapologetically masculine guys who happened to want other men. That made Gage's films feel radically different from much of the gay erotic material that had come before.
Richard Locke returned as Hank, joined by a remarkable collection of 1970s gay adult-film personalities including Michael Kearns, Will Seagers, Paul Barresi and Casey Donovan. Gage approached the production unusually seriously for the genre: characters, dialogue and sexual encounters were scripted rather than simply improvised around the camera.
The result became one of the defining films of pre-AIDS gay male erotic cinema and an artifact of that brief post-Stonewall period when gay sexuality was becoming more visible, more commercial and considerably less interested in asking permission.
