Long before South Florida’s LGBTQ+ nightlife became concentrated in Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale, Keith’s Cruise Room gave gay men in Hallandale a place built around the oldest nightlife tradition there is: seeing who walked through the door.

Located in Hallandale, Florida, Keith’s belonged to the region’s earlier network of gay bars, lounges, adult businesses, and cruise-oriented spaces that served locals and visitors moving between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Its name was refreshingly direct. This was not a place pretending the social part of nightlife happened by accident.

Bars like Keith’s were especially important before apps and online dating changed the way gay men connected. A neighborhood cruise bar could function as meeting place, social network, and late-night destination all at once. Regulars knew the bartenders, newcomers quickly learned the rhythm of the room, and an ordinary drink could become considerably less ordinary before closing time.

South Florida’s gay scene during the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s was far more geographically scattered than it is today. Smaller venues in places like Hallandale helped knit together a broader queer corridor stretching from Miami Beach through Fort Lauderdale and beyond.
