Julius was one of the gay bars that helped give Virginia Beach and the larger Hampton Roads area its own queer nightlife scene through the 1980s and 1990s.

Located near the oceanfront, Julius appears in period listings around Pacific Avenue and later in regional guides with a Baltic Avenue address. Like so many gay bars from that era, the exact details can get a little fuzzy depending on the year—but the name keeps showing up in memories of the local scene.

Julius was part of a larger network of Hampton Roads gay bars that included places like Ambush, SNAFU, and The Quest. These weren’t just somewhere to get a drink. They were where people met friends, found dates, danced, heard gossip, came out, and built community in a part of Virginia where queer spaces still had to work a little harder to exist.
