First exploding onto the scene with the New York Dolls in the early 1970s, Thunders fused glam swagger with street-level grit — lipstick and leather, St. Marks and Sunset Strip. When the Dolls burned out, he doubled down with The Heartbreakers, helping define the sound and style of first-wave punk.
His 1978 solo record So Alone cemented his legend — equal parts vulnerability and voltage. Thunders’ music was never polished. It was cracked, urgent, romantic, and reckless.
