Jobriath — Promo Tee (1970s)
Before glam had fully caught up to itself, Jobriath arrived fully formed—pianist, performer, and openly gay rock star at a time when the industry barely knew what to do with that. Marketed heavily in the early ’70s with billboards, hype campaigns, and major-label backing, he was positioned as a new kind of superstar: theatrical, vulnerable, and defiantly visible.
The music pulled from glam, cabaret, and art rock, but the image was just as important—makeup, costumes, and a sense of drama that pushed beyond typical rock masculinity. While commercial success never fully landed in its time, Jobriath later became a cult figure and an important early symbol of queer visibility in rock music.
