Brash, fearless, relentlessly funny, and almost pathologically incapable of keeping a thought to herself, Joan Rivers spent more than five decades turning celebrity, aging, sex, plastic surgery, fashion, marriage—and especially herself—into material.

Rivers broke through in the 1960s after appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, eventually becoming Carson’s permanent guest host. In 1986, she made television history with The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers, becoming the first woman to host a late-night network talk show.

But reinvention was Joan’s real specialty. Stand-up comedian, talk-show host, author, jewelry entrepreneur, red-carpet interrogator, reality star—whenever one door closed, she generally kicked another one open while making a joke about whoever had closed the first.

Her later red-carpet work introduced an entirely new generation to Joan. With the wonderfully dangerous question “Who are you wearing?”, she helped transform awards-show fashion coverage into entertainment itself, eventually bringing her gloriously uncensored opinions to Fashion Police.

Rivers also developed an enormous LGBTQ+ following. Her combination of survival, glamour, vulgarity, self-invention, and refusal to disappear made her a natural queer icon. She performed for gay audiences throughout her career, supported AIDS charities, and understood something her fans already knew: if people are going to stare, you might as well give them a show.
