James Dean 

Three movies. Twenty-four years old. Somehow, that was enough.

James Dean became one of the defining faces of 1950s American youth with East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Giant (1956). Only East of Eden had been released when Dean died in a car crash on September 30, 1955. The other two arrived after his death, turning an already rising young actor into something almost instantly mythic.

It was Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause who created the image that never really went away: red jacket, white T-shirt, jeans, cigarette, tousled hair, and that combination of toughness and vulnerability that made Dean feel completely different from the square-jawed movie stars who came before him.

But Dean was more complicated than the poster-boy rebel he became. He studied acting seriously, worked with the Actors Studio, photographed beautifully, raced cars, played bongos, made strange little television appearances, and seemed perfectly comfortable resisting the conventional masculinity expected of a 1950s leading man.

That ambiguity has also made him an enduring queer icon. Dean’s relationships and sexuality have been debated for decades, with conflicting accounts from people who knew him, but his refusal to fit neatly into the period’s expectations of male behavior has remained an important part of his appeal.
