J’s Hangout — New York, NY (1970s–1980s)

Tucked inside the infamous “Triangle” building at 14th Street and 9th Avenue, J’s Hangout was a cornerstone of NYC’s after-hours leather scene. Operating through the 1970s and ’80s, it lived in a building already known for its intensity—alongside spots like Hellfire and the Manhole—where one venue bled into the next and the night never really ended.

J’s wasn’t a typical bar. It was where you went after everything else closed. Late, loud, and high-energy, it carried that raw, anything-can-happen atmosphere that defined the era’s underground nightlife. People arrived deep into the night and left in the early morning light—if they left at all.

Its location alone made it significant, anchoring a stretch of the city that became central to the leather and cruising scene during a formative time in New York’s queer history.
