Image Leather — San Francisco Gay Leather Shop Tee
San Francisco has long been one of the great capitals of gay leather culture, and Image Leather was one of the specialty shops that helped define the city's famously adventurous style.
This wasn't your average clothing store.
Image Leather belonged to a world of leather jackets, tight pants, harnesses, boots, belts, and accessories designed for men whose idea of dressing up involved considerably more hardware than the average department store carried.
And in San Francisco, there was certainly an audience for it.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the city's South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood became an internationally recognized center of gay leather and fetish culture. Legendary establishments like the Tool Box, the Ramrod, and the Eagle helped create a thriving scene of motorcycle clubs, leather bars, specialty businesses, and men who took their denim and leather very seriously.
Shops like Image Leather were an essential part of that culture. They weren't simply places to buy clothes. They offered opportunities to explore personal style, discover an underground community, and find merchandise that mainstream retailers wouldn't have dreamed of putting in their windows.
