Published alongside the Erotica album, the infamous metal-covered book featured photographs by Steven Meisel and Madonna as her alter ego Mistress Dita, exploring sex, fantasy, voyeurism, BDSM, and queer desire with absolutely no interest in making any of it respectable.

The timing made it even more provocative. This was the height of the AIDS crisis and the culture wars, when sexuality—particularly queer sexuality—was being debated, censored, and politicized everywhere. Madonna responded by putting it right on the coffee table.

The book sold out its enormous first printing almost immediately, while critics and moral watchdogs went into overdrive. Three decades later, SEX is a genuine collector’s item and increasingly recognized as one of the defining artifacts of Madonna’s career: funny, confrontational, ridiculous, beautiful, and very deliberately too much.
