Hot Shots — West Hollywood, California

Hot Shots was part of the crowded, fast-changing gay nightlife scene that made West Hollywood a destination during the 1970s and 1980s. At a time when Santa Monica Boulevard was lined with bars, discos, restaurants, shops, and gathering places created for gay men, clubs like Hot Shots offered something still difficult to find elsewhere: a room where no explanation was required.

These venues were built around music, cruising, conversation, and the possibility that the evening might improve considerably before closing time. Their advertisements were often just as direct—bold type, handsome men, and names that worked equally well as a promise and a description of the clientele.

West Hollywood had not yet incorporated as its own city for most of this era, but its queer community was already shaping the neighborhood’s identity. Gay businesses helped transform the area into a social and political center, creating the foundation for the city that formally emerged in 1984 with an openly gay political presence.
