When Heaven opened in 1985, Houston’s LGBTQ community was already reshaping Montrose into the city’s queer epicenter. Heaven arrived at a pivotal moment — the height of ’80s dance culture, the heartbreak of the AIDS crisis, and the era when gay bars were equal parts nightclub and community center.

And Heaven leaned fully into spectacle.

Lights.
Fog machines.
Big dance floor energy.

Operating from 1985 to 1997, Heaven became one of Houston’s defining late-’80s and early-’90s gay clubs — a place where house music replaced disco, where drag grew bigger and bolder, and where a new generation claimed the floor.
