Directed by John Cassavetes and starring the incomparable Gena Rowlands, Gloria is a gritty New York crime thriller centered on one of the most unforgettable women in American cinema.
Rowlands plays Gloria, a former mob girlfriend who reluctantly becomes the protector of a young boy targeted by gangsters. Armed with little more than street smarts, a revolver, and complete confidence in her ability to handle absolutely anyone, she leads him across a wonderfully grimy late-1970s New York while staying one step ahead of the mob.
Gloria is tough without becoming a caricature.
