GIRL VAMPIRE — Topstone Masks Vintage Ad Tee
Before Halloween masks became elaborate collectibles, there was Topstone—cheap rubber monsters, fantastic names, and some of the greatest mail-order advertising ever aimed at monster-obsessed kids.
The Topstone Rubber Toy Company had been making masks for decades, but its monster designs became especially iconic during the 1950s and ’60s. They were inexpensive, weird, and widely advertised through monster magazines and mail-order outlets. By the early ’60s, characters like the Shock Monster, Lagoon Monster, Horrible Melting Man, Teenage Werewolf, and Girl Vampire had become part of the whole Monster Kid universe.
And honestly, the ads may have been even better than the masks. Illustrator Keith Ward created these wonderfully lurid drawings that made every Topstone monster look absolutely terrifying. The actual masks were thin, inexpensive rubber—but the illustrations promised something straight out of your worst nightmare. That disconnect is part of their charm now.
Girl Vampire was one of the classics, appearing in Famous Monsters of Filmland as early as 1959 and continuing through those unforgettable early Topstone ads.
