Gay Monopoly — Replica Tee (1983)
Released in 1983 by the tongue-in-cheek “Parker Sisters,” Gay Monopoly: A Celebration of Gay Life! was an unofficial, unauthorized queer spin on the classic board game—and one of the most unforgettable pieces of LGBTQ+ camp pop culture from the era.
The game reimagined Monopoly through the lens of 1980s gay culture: properties became places like Fire Island and Castro Street, houses and hotels were replaced with bars and bathhouses, and the player tokens included items like a leather cap, stiletto heel, teddy bear, and handcuffs.
It arrived during a moment when queer communities were creating their own media, humor, and references—often outside the mainstream and with a healthy dose of satire. At the same time, it also nodded back to the long history of Monopoly itself, which originated in 1903 as The Landlord’s Game, created by Lizzie Magie as a critique of wealth inequality before evolving into the commercial Monopoly phenomenon decades later.
Part parody, part artifact, Gay Monopoly became a cult object—equal parts hilarious, coded, and unexpectedly historical.
