FUBAR (West Hollywood, California) — 1997-2020
A cornerstone of West Hollywood’s dive-bar side of queer nightlife, FUBAR was the antidote to polished clubs and velvet ropes. Dark, loud, and unapologetically scrappy, it drew punks, leather guys, bears, drag kids, and anyone who preferred their drinks strong and their music even stronger. It was a place where metal, industrial, and underground dance mixed with late-night cruising and a crowd that didn’t care about trends.
Operating through the 2000s and into the 2010s, FUBAR carried forward the tradition of L.A.’s rough-around-the-edges gay bars—spaces that felt more like basements and back rooms than celebrity lounges. It was known for themed nights, go-go boys, and a sense that anything could happen once the lights went low.
