In 1970s San Francisco, Folsom Street wasn’t just an address — it was an identity.
The “Folsom Street Man” tee emerged during the height of the city’s leather and clone era, when South of Market (SoMa) became the epicenter of gay biker bars, leather clubs, and unapologetic masculinity. This was post-Stonewall confidence turned into uniform: Levi’s, boots, flannel, bandanas, mustaches.
The shirt itself was simple. Direct. Proud.
In the years when Pride marches were still protests, when leather culture was still misunderstood even within the broader LGBTQ community, Folsom Street became a symbol of sexual freedom and chosen family. Bars like The Eagle, The Stud, Boot Camp, and countless others shaped a neighborhood where identity was lived loudly.
