Rooted in earlier cocktail-hour traditions and reimagined through disco and post-Stonewall liberation, the Tea Dance turned patios and outdoor decks into open-air dance floors, blending elegance, hedonism, and community.
In 1984, the Pines was at its cultural peak: a summer enclave of artists, professionals, drag queens, and downtown regulars who came for freedom, fashion, and the feeling of being surrounded entirely by their own. The Tea Dance was both social and symbolic—a daily celebration of visibility, connection, and survival, just as the AIDS crisis was beginning to cast its shadow.
