The Filling Station — Houston, Texas Vintage Gay Leather Bar Tee
There was a time when gay bars didn't need elaborate cocktail menus, velvet ropes, or a social media strategy. Sometimes all you needed was a dark room, a cold beer, a few handsome men in leather, and a name with a wonderfully suggestive double meaning.
And The Filling Station, located at 1801 Richmond Avenue in Houston, Texas, certainly had the name covered.
Part of Houston's old-school gay leather bar scene, The Filling Station belonged to a nightlife culture built around denim, boots, leather jackets, motorcycle gear, and a healthy appreciation for rugged masculinity. This wasn't the glamorous disco side of gay nightlife. It was a world of Levis, harnesses, mustaches, and men who preferred their bars a little rougher around the edges.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Houston developed a thriving LGBTQ+ community, with Montrose and the surrounding neighborhoods becoming home to gay bars, clubs, bookstores, and businesses. These establishments offered much more than a place to drink. They were gathering spots where gay men could meet, socialize, and express themselves in ways that weren't always possible outside their doors.
