Fatal Attraction
Released in 1987, Fatal Attraction turned a weekend affair into one of the defining psychological thrillers of the decade—and made the phrase “I’m not going to be ignored” permanently unsettling.
Michael Douglas stars as Dan Gallagher, a married New York lawyer whose brief affair with Alex Forrest, played by Glenn Close, spirals into obsession, stalking, violence, and domestic terror. What begins as glossy adult drama quickly becomes something much darker, with Close giving Alex a level of intensity that made the character instantly iconic.
The film was a massive hit and became a genuine cultural phenomenon, earning six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Close. It also tapped directly into late-1980s anxieties around marriage, sex, infidelity, career women, and the supposed dangers waiting just outside respectable suburban life.
Its legacy is more complicated now. Alex was originally written with greater vulnerability, and Close has spoken over the years about feeling that the final version pushed the character too far into monster territory. Modern audiences are often more sympathetic to her instability and more critical of how the film treats female sexuality and mental illness. None of that has diminished its grip on pop culture.
Then, of course, there is the rabbit. Few movie images have become shorthand for obsession as quickly as that boiling pot, and almost four decades later it still requires no explanation.
