Premiering in 1979, The Facts of Life became one of the defining sitcoms of the 1980s—and one of the rare shows of its era centered almost entirely on the lives of young women.

A spin-off of Diff’rent Strokes, the series followed a group of students at the fictional Eastland School under the watchful eye of Mrs. Garrett, played by Charlotte Rae. By its second season, the show had settled into the core group fans still remember best: Blair, Jo, Natalie, and Tootie.

Part of the show’s appeal was how different the girls were from one another. Blair was polished and wealthy, Jo was tough and working-class, Natalie was funny and self-aware, and Tootie was curious, excitable, and impossible not to notice. Their friendships gave the series its heart.

Over nine seasons, The Facts of Life tackled subjects that were unusually direct for a network sitcom: sex, divorce, body image, class, racism, disability, grief, and growing up. It could be broad and silly one week and surprisingly serious the next.

The show also developed a lasting queer following, helped by its emphasis on chosen family, strong female friendships, Jo’s famously tomboyish style, and a cast of characters who never fit neatly into one type. For generations of LGBTQ+ viewers, Eastland felt like the kind of place where the outsiders somehow found one another.
