El Matador (San Diego Gay Bar/70's and 80's)

In the 1970s and 1980s, El Matador was part of San Diego’s thriving gay beach-bar scene, located at 4633 Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach. It began as a women’s bar and, by the 1980s, had evolved into a spot attracting a largely male gay clientele.

This was San Diego gay nightlife at its most Southern California: beach crowds, bathing suits, beer, and an atmosphere far removed from the darker urban bars associated with other cities. Contemporary histories remember barbecues at the Matador drawing large groups of locals and tourists, often arriving straight from the beach.

By the mid-1970s, San Diego had nearly 30 gay bars scattered across neighborhoods including Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Hillcrest, downtown, and beyond. El Matador belonged to a particularly beloved cluster of beach-oriented venues that gave the city’s queer scene its own unmistakable character.

Like many gay bars of the period, its clientele and identity shifted over time. That evolution—from a women’s bar into a predominantly male gathering place—also reflects how queer nightlife constantly adapted to changing communities, neighborhoods, and social patterns.
