East Side Sauna (New York City) — 1970s to mid-1980s
A key chapter in Manhattan’s pre-corporate, pre-cleanup queer landscape, East Side Sauna was one of the city’s best-known gay bathhouses during the post-Stonewall era. Located on the East Side, it served as both a social crossroads and a refuge, drawing locals, travelers, and regulars looking for connection, privacy, and community in a time when few public spaces felt truly safe.
Operating through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, East Side Sauna existed during a brief window of sexual freedom and urban grit, just before the AIDS crisis and city crackdowns permanently reshaped New York’s nightlife. More than a venue, it was part of an underground network of places that allowed queer life to exist openly, if quietly, in the fabric of the city.
