Dynasty — Vintage Television Tee
Few television shows understood glamour, excess, and the importance of making an entrance quite like Dynasty.
Premiering in 1981, Dynasty invited audiences into the extravagant world of the Carrington family—a place of oil fortunes, sprawling mansions, corporate rivalries, romantic betrayals, and family secrets. Every argument was dramatic, every outfit was immaculate, and no insult was complete without a perfectly timed stare.
The arrival of Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington transformed the series into a cultural phenomenon. Elegant, ruthless, witty, and always several steps ahead, Alexis became one of television’s greatest characters. Her battles with Krystle Carrington—played by Linda Evans—produced some of the decade’s most memorable confrontations, from boardroom power struggles to the occasional fight in a lily pond.
But beneath the shoulder pads and champagne, Dynasty also made television history. Steven Carrington was one of the first major gay characters on an American prime-time drama. Although his storylines reflected the limitations and attitudes of the era, his presence brought gay identity into millions of homes at a time when LGBTQ+ representation on television was still exceedingly rare.
At its height, Dynasty helped define the visual language of the 1980s: enormous shoulder pads, jeweled gowns, dramatic interiors, champagne-fueled confrontations, and wealth displayed with absolutely no interest in subtlety.
