Christopher Lee as Dracula — Vintage 1970s Horror Tee
Before vampires sparkled, Christopher Lee’s Dracula had bloodshot eyes, a black cape, and absolutely no interest in being charming about it.
Christopher Lee first donned the cape for Hammer Films in 1958’s Dracula (Horror of Dracula in the U.S.), transforming Bram Stoker’s Count into something more physical, sensual, and genuinely dangerous. With his towering frame, piercing stare, and flashes of startling violence, Lee helped reinvent Dracula for a new generation.
He returned to the role repeatedly through the 1960s and early ’70s in Hammer films including Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Scars of Dracula, and the gloriously period-specific Dracula A.D. 1972. By then, Lee’s face had become nearly inseparable from the character.
Hammer’s Dracula films also brought a new erotic charge to Gothic horror. Low-cut nightgowns, heaving bosoms, bloody mouths, and Lee’s unmistakably seductive Count pushed against the boundaries of what mainstream horror could show. Campy in retrospect but genuinely provocative at the time, the films became cult favorites and helped establish the visual language of modern vampire cinema.
