Double R — Miami, FL
Long before South Beach became an international destination, the Double R was giving Miami's LGBTQ+ community a place to pull on a pair of boots and hit the dance floor.
Known as Miami's premier gay country-western bar, the Double R carved out a unique identity within the city's nightlife. While much of Miami became synonymous with disco, Latin dance, and high-energy clubs, the Double R embraced a different tradition—cowboy hats, Wrangler jeans, leather boots, two-stepping, and country music with a distinctly gay twist.
The bar became a gathering place for South Florida's country-western community, welcoming everyone from seasoned dancers to curious newcomers. Line dancing, partner dancing, country DJs, and themed nights created an atmosphere that felt more like a hometown dance hall than a typical nightclub.
Like many country-western gay bars across America, the Double R was part of a larger movement that flourished during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Venues from Seattle to Dallas to Atlanta proved that cowboy culture wasn't limited to the rural West—it had found an enthusiastic home within LGBTQ+ communities as well. Organizations, dance clubs, and rodeo associations helped strengthen those connections, with bars like the Double R serving as their social headquarters.
More than a place to dance, the Double R was a neighborhood institution. Friendships formed over longnecks, couples met on the dance floor, and regulars returned week after week because it felt like home.
Today, the Double R is remembered as one of Miami's classic gay bars and an important part of South Florida's LGBTQ+ history, representing an era when country-western nightlife offered its own welcoming corner of the community.
